Elisa Giardina Papa at Mambo in Bogotá

Elisa Giardina Papa’s solo exhibition We Flickered In and Out of History opened on March 12th, 2026 at the Museum of Modern Art in Bogotá (MAMBO).

In this new project, Giardina Papa engages with geology, myth, and political history, recounting the story of an island that emerged from the sea in 1831 between Tunisia and Sicily, sparking a violent sovereignty dispute among European powers. Six months later, the island vanished underwater. The work leaps between the historical and the speculative to meditate on the illuminatory potential of an island that refused to be annexed. The large-scale video installation has been in development since the artist received the 13th edition of the Italian Council grant (2024) for this project. 

The artists will have a solo exhibition at Galerie Tanja Wagner in Berlin in April, which will be on show during Gallery Weekend Berlin, May 1–3, 2026.
